"I have come to the conclusion that much can be learned about music by devoting oneself to the mushroom." — John Cage
During the "stay-home" period of 2020, confined indoors, I became aware of how relentlessly we — myself included — are ordinarily driven by time.
Musicians typically express themselves by producing sound. John Cage's 4′33″ is performed, by contrast, without any intentional sound from the performer.
My hope is that this performance offers a moment to listen for sounds normally drowned out by our time-pressured lives
— and to reconsider what we mean by the experience of time itself.
For this performance, each of the three movements was recorded at a different time of day
— night, morning, and midday — to bring the sense of time's flow into sharper focus.
The filming location is a private house that has since been demolished.
The beginning and end of each movement are indicated by placing and lifting the bow from the string.
This work was also commissioned and released as part of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's "Art ni Yell wo!" arts-support program.
Many double bass solo works were composed assuming "solo tuning," which differs from standard orchestral tuning. When these works are performed in orchestral tuning, the piano accompaniment must be transposed — yet transposed accompaniment scores are rarely available.
To address this, transposed piano accompaniment scores are prepared and made available for purchase.
